"What? We have no such "catchphrase" in my country! I... Ah... Nyet. I have nothing."
―Wonder-Yellow after being prompted by Wonder-Blue to deliver a catchphrase, Operation 003-C

Wonder-Yellow (real name Ivan Istochnikov) is one of The Wonderful 101's protagonists. Yellow is a Wonderful One, a member of a team of 100 special combat agents created by the CENTINELS Planetary Secret Service to defend the Earth from the GEATHJERK Federation Supreme Armada.

A gentle giant, Wonder-Yellow is the strongest member of the team, but his shy nature often results in him feeling awkward and embarrassed any time he's put in the spotlight.
Despite these minor shortcomings, Yellow is still powerful enough to complete any mission through brute strength alone, and his kind personality and optimism in the face of danger allows the rest of the team to rely on him for mental support, too.

Wonder-Yellow joins the team in Operation 003-A wielding the Peta-Peta Hammer, and is the default user of Unite Hammer Icon AltUnite Hammer.

Wonderful File[]

A member of the Russian army and hero to its people, Wonder-Yellow is so strong that he survived several trying missions through brute strength alone. As the "tank" of the team, he brings a tank-sized contribution to any mission, serving as the backbone that holds together the somewhat haphazard group of Wonderful Ones.

Despite his large figure, he actually has an extremely gentle personality, frowning upon violence and fighting and seemingly impervious to any of Green's insults. He is also shy to a fault, feeling awkward in public and reticent to take action, but he makes up for these shortcomings with his incredible scouting skills.

The kindness that emanates from Yellow has a healing effect on those around him, making him the mental support the team relies on when the situation is grim. It also helps that Yellow's muscle has save the team in a pinch, time and time again.

His weapon, the Peta-Peta Hammer, is made of the heaviest metal in the galaxy, Peta Omorium. His Unite Hammer is strong enough to smash through even the sturdiest GEATH-Titanium.

A father of two, Yellow spends his downtime with his family.

Description[]

Appearance[]

As a bodybuilding Russian soldier, Ivan Istochnikov has a hulking physique, with small beady eyes and a clean shaven look. Dressed for cold Siberian weather, Ivan wears a winter uniform resembling a Soviet army winter uniform, which consists of a decorated, yellow-brown, double-breasted greatcoat with fur lining, brown gloves and boots, and a brown ushanka hat with its earflaps down.
His hair is not normally visible, but when his CENTINEL-Suit is damaged later in the game, short tufts of brown hair are visible poking through his hat, which alongside his clean shaven neck, suggests a "high and tight" crew cut hairstyle underneath.

As Wonder-Yellow, he dons a Wonder-Mask and a yellow CENTINEL-Suit resembling his civilian coat, with a fur-lined yellow jacket branding the Wonderful Ones logo across its back, and a yellow ushanka with its earflaps tied up.
Like all Wonderful Ones, when Yellow activates his suit's Unlimited form, a cape is released from the back of the suit and jaw-like plates extend from his mask, covering his mouth. When knocked out, Yellow's suit vanishes and he's reduced to black briefs and his yellow ushanka.

Wonder-Yellow's issued weapon is the Peta-Peta Hammer: a massive double-faced hammer made of the heaviest metal in the galaxy, "Peta Omorium". The hammer's round faces are a bare grey metal, and the heads of the hammer are covered by bright red ridges resembling compressible bellows, although the heads are revealed to be solid metal underneath after being damaged. The hammer's handle features a timer dial near the top, a golden Wonderful Ones emblem on each side, three floating metal rings near the middle, and the text "petaxpeta" written on the handle.

Personality and traits[]

Wonder-Yellow intro QTE fail

One of Wonder-Yellow's QTE failures

Despite Wonder-Yellow's brute strength, he's gentle and extremely shy, with a habit of getting embarrassed and acting awkwardly in social situations. As a result of his shyness, when left to his own devices Yellow can appear somewhat incompetent for a Wonderful One, having once gotten lost on a mission to protect Professor Shirogane and somehow ending up trapped alone in the ceiling of a cargo shuttle instead.

Claiming that "We do not announce ourselves in my country", Wonder-Yellow is the least talkative of the seven main Wonderful Ones (after Wonder-Black, who never talks), rarely having anything to add to a conversation.

While Yellow's bumbling antics sometimes result in ridicule from the rest of the team, they nonetheless admire his strength and abilities as a Wonderful One. Unfortunately, Yellow is uncomfortable in the spotlight, and he easily becomes panicked and embarrassed when he receives any recognition for his efforts and contributions.

Despite his awkward behavior, Yellow has the ability to remain calm and optimistic even in the most dire of missions, a trait that provides comfort and reassurance to those around him.

Yellow speaks with a Russian accent and slightly broken syntax, with a tendency to say "da" and "nyet" instead of "yes" or "no".

Trivia[]

  • Wonder-Yellow is named after the fictional Soviet Cosmonaut, Ivan Istochnikov, created by Spanish conceptual artist Joan Fontcuberta as part of a modern art experiment in which he created a hoax based on the Lost Cosmonaut conspiracy theory.
    • The name "Ivan Istochnikov" is merely a Russian translation of Joan Fontcuberta's name, which roughly translates to "John Hiddenfountain" in English.
  • Wonder-Yellow, a.k.a. the "Hammering Russkie", is one of the only two characters referred to by their nicknames in Wonder-Red's intros, the other being the "8-Bit Enchanter", Wonder-Black.
  • Wonder-Yellow's weapon, the Peta-Peta Hammer, is based on Piko-Piko Hammers (Japanese Wikipedia article), a variety of toy hammer in Japan named after the "piko" sound made when air escapes from inside the hammer after striking something.
    • The name of the Peta-Peta Hammer might also be a pun based metric unit prefixes: "pico" is the prefix for one trillionth of a unit, whereas a "peta" is the prefix for one quadrillion units, implying that the Peta-Peta Hammer is one octillion times more powerful than a Piko-Piko Hammer.
  • At 33 years old, Wonder-Yellow is the oldest of the seven main Wonderful Ones, and the only known parent, with two unnamed children. Although his Wonderful File briefly mentions his family and two children, his marital status is unknown.
  • The word yellow is often used as an insult toward cowardly people, a description that fits Wonder-Yellow to some degree.
  • Wonder-Yellow appears as a Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
